Lily's Marbles
Ermine-VC
We
had great hopes for Marbles as a brood doe. We paired her with Gilligan, a
tiny BEW buck, in the hope of getting some of our very first BEW kits. So excited at the prospect of seeing what
her kits would look like, we certainly were not prepared for her
untimely death. As much as one hates to play favorites, Marbles
was one of my very favorite rabbits... a connection formed since her
birth. I will miss her profusely.
I had
read of troubles with does and kindling but, until now, I hadn't had
the displeasure to experience such things. Marbles gave birth to
her first litter of kits on March 4, 2007. All seemed well as she
pulled her fur and prepared her nest... when I came back to check
on her progress just a short time later, she was in shock. She
died from blood loss as the result of a prolapsed uterus and
cervix. Before she passed, she made certain that her beautiful
little kits were fed well with full bellies. She would be
relieved to know that her own mother is fostering them with great
care... even with her own three new kits to nurse, she is producing
plenty of milk for all seven. We will be keeping most of Marbles
kits to pass on her legacy.
StoneyBrook's S4 Silly
BEW
On
the morning of June 30th, Silly was found deceased in her cage.
With five week old kits in the nestbox, I had to know what the cause of
death might have been. Dr. Lampert (my wonderful mobile vet)
performed an autopsy to find what were the signs of Gastroenteritis...
she had been on 'first cut' hay for only just two days. Her
sister Sally is missing her very much... as well as I. She
certainly was a funny 'little' rabbit and a great mom!
